Good questions, Hube!
The picture you asked about also appears in a long Quora posting by Jakub Bończak, who says he has studied a lot of Polish history: https://www.quora.com/profile/Jakub-Bo%C5%84czak . He identified that picture indeed as “Lamentation over dead credit… a 1655 cloured woodcut showing how diverse was bourgoise of Poland-Lithuania… and that’s a mere tip of an iceberg. Peasantry was also very diverse both in terms of ethnicity, welath and legal status…” (from his post What was life like in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for the common person compared to other European states?) And you’re right, the woman on the left was not included in the caption. And good question about what “memeron” means.

p.s. I also added some maps at the bottom of the document.

Cheers,
Nellie

Fascinating, Nellie!  Thanks for going so far down the rabbit hole.
The last illustration, showing the dress of various professions, raises questions.
  – Why did the commentator skip the woman at lower left?  According to good ol’ Google Translate, she’s a mercant or tradeswoman.
  – What does the standing merchant’s document say?  A quick search for “memeron” came up with something from Final Fantasy and a (defunct?)  Alzheimer’s medicine.  Neither of which probably applies here.
  – Are they really all gathered ’round mourning the death of Credit?

Hello Carmina!
I got obsessed and did some research on the composers and their background in the tumultuous history of Poland from the 1580s to the 1690s. I also wanted to learn more about the unicorn verse in Psalm 29. Richard, please forgive me if some of this is info you have already shared with the group. It may have slipped my mind.
A file with my notes and pictures can be found at
Please let me know if you have trouble accessing it.
Cheers,
Nellie
